So now it is a few weeks since the participants in the Swedish Selection to Eurovision Song Contest was announced and as promised I will give my view of the upcoming contest without hearing any of the songs of course. I can only go on what the artists and songwriters usually sound like so this is kind of a shot in the dark so far. And upon the evenings of the contest views might change completely.
The picture above comes from Gustav Dahlanders expert blog on SVT, https://blogg.svt.se/melodifestivalen-expertbloggen Note that Mr Dahlander is working with the contest and therefore need to keep a more objective view of the entries submitted than fan bloggers do.
I will focus on some of the participants and exclude others based on the facts that I do not know enough about them. So here we go…
Anna Bergendahl – Already a Melodifestivalen winner and also behind the Swedish entry in Eurovision which never went through to the final. Something Sweden was SO surprised about, not me…. If you read my blog from Gylleneskor back then I already in the semifinal in the selection said she had no chance in Eurovision. Simply cause I don’t liked her at all back then. Now teamed up with a strong team of song writers and most likely she also changed her sound growing up from a Idol reject to a real artist I don’t know where she stands today. But since it was, back then, her voice I don’t like I am afraid her entry now will be one of my hate entries.
Nano – My God, more of this? He already scared me when he turned out to be a favorite two years ago with one of the worst entries int he history of the contest. But he also teamed up with the Deb´s and G:son song writing team, songwriters who only exists in different Eurovision selections in Europe. Most likely I will hate this.
Mohombi – I looked forward to see Mohombi in the French Section since he is more of a star in France then Sweden, but OK lets go for it. So far he is most famous for taking off his t shirt when he entered the competition last time. He is also by SVT described as a world star… hm… From what I know he has not had any hits for a while so I might see this more as a comeback. But I will most likely like this looking back on what he’s done before.
Arja Saijonmaa – Fun to see her back but the title kind of tell me this will be more like Charlottes latest entry and not so much uptempo schlager.
Wiktoria – Please girl give up.
Andreas Johnson – Again? Really? OK, never disappoint me but he is so in the middle of the road and even if he might win in Sweden his style is not Eurovision winning material.
Liamoo – Again? Last years nightmare wasn’t enough? Here teamed up with a Hanna Ferm, I know nothing about her.
Margaret – Polish cheap taste singer for some reason trying to sing for Sweden and not Poland. Very strange decision.
Jon Henrik Fjällgren – I dont know how much Joik we will hear from Jon Henrik but if he is going to succeed again he need to come up with something new, like the fantastic “Hon var vacker” from 2017. If so, I support him all into the “Kaklet” as we say in Sweden.
Dolly Style – Im not the goal for their music but I actually think they are fun, won’t win a selection in Sweden believe me. But if a stupid song like “Toy” can win Eurovision I think Dolly Style might stand better in Eurovision than in the Swedish selection.
Lina Hedlund – Alcazar split up and Lina back solo, her last attempt as a solo artist in Melodifestivalen is one of my all time favorites so hopefully this will be a mix between what she done in Alcazar and the Stock/Aitken/Waterman wine from her last entry.
And then we will see some others we know, Arvingarna, Ann-Louise Hansson, Jan Malmsjö, Lisa Ajax, John Lundvik, Martin Stenmark and some former members of boybands broken up and now try on their own since the same thing was a success last year. And last years winner Mr Ingrosso is back as a songwriter.
So is 2019 the year we will see some kind of vitamin injection in the Contest? I say no, looking maybe more on the songwriters we will have the same mix of artists trying to find the best formula to be played on radio and have a radio hit or to be streamed on Spotify. It worked well for Sweden in Eurovision until 2018 when the viewers in Europe clearly stated they was tiered on this formula. Bad for Benjamin Ingrosso cause for once the song was a really good one but kind of the same same same as we sent in different packages sine Loreen.
The Melodifestivalen need a revamp, most on the songwriter side, A bit much with Deb Deb Deb Deb G:son Deb… And the selectionn of artists also show that we don’t have so many more to put in there now. Talent show runner ups and winners mixed with desperate comeback trials. Go from 5 semi finals (2nd chance included) to 2 and free the international jury from instructions and let them vote how they want to, not with the “Try to find the Eurovision winner”. If they do that we will keep sending slick radio productions to Eurovision and again fail to go from semi final to final.
This is my words on the Melodifestivalen 2019 without any listening to the entries, at the end I might sit here telling you 2019 was the best year ever, we will see
